Hearing loss compensation and the damaging effects of auditory deprivation

In the majority of such no-win no-fee claims, patients who receive hearing loss compensation do so not for sudden deafness but for that which is caused gradually by excessive exposure to loud noises over a prolonged period.

It is this fact that can make it difficult for some claimants to realise that there is even a problem; quite simply, becoming accustomed to hearing loss may sometimes mean that the condition is identified only after it is too late.

One problem with this scenario is the fact that the brain loses its ability to make sense of auditory signals such as speech and music.

Audiologist Dr Cindy Beyer, senior vice president of HearUSA, comments on the findings of one important study, "When the brain is insufficiently stimulated by sound over a period of time, it can lose a portion of its ability to process information," she says.

"This condition is called auditory deprivation and studies indicate that the longer a patient goes without treatment the more likely it is that the brain will forget how to process speech, even after treatment is implemented."

The phenomenon of auditory deprivation only serves to underline the importance of employers safeguarding the hearing of employees through the use of risk assessments, ear defenders, regular testing of at risk workers and staggered exposure to hazardous noise. Any failure to ensure this is likely to result in the employer being found liable for hearing loss compensation.

Dr Beyer reiterates, "These findings strongly suggest that delaying treatment for hearing loss for years, as so many do, can risk permanently impairing the brain's ability to understand speech."
