Can ginkgo biloba live up to its reputation for easing tinnitus symptoms?

Many sufferers of tinnitus report that they have found that their symptoms have been relieved by taking ginkgo biloba supplements. However, a study undertaken by the British Tinnitus Association claims that the herb has no measurable effect on tinnitus symptoms.

Personal injury solicitor, tinnitusThe trial was conducted under double-blind conditions, and monitored almost a thousand sufferers, which gives its results a good claim to reliability. Some sufferers received ginkgo biloba supplements, and some received medically inactive placebos; similar numbers of sufferers in both groups reported improvements in their symptoms. It is also not the only trial to have reported such results.

The scientists behind the trial did point out that ginkgo biloba is unlikely to make anything worse, and it has also been pointed out that it may yet be shown to help in specific types of tinnitus. It has already been shown to have positive effects in treating cerebral insufficiency, which can have tinnitus as a symptom.

Herbalists and complementary health practitioners back the herb as a source of relief, and it is widely available.

However, reported side-effects include headaches, bad temper, anxiety and diarrhoea, and some adverse interactions with other drugs have been noted, such as anti-coagulants and anti-depressants. For this reason, it is probably wise to consult a doctor or pharmacist before trying ginkgo biloba to treat tinnitus.
