Music industry attitudes and tinnitus claims

Unfortunately, there is still a level of stigma attached to the use of ear plug and ear defenders by professionals in the music industry – in fact, some experts argue that the industry is in denial about the threat of deafness and tinnitus, but with every deafness and tinnitus claim made by a music industry worker, the sands are shifting, although not quickly enough.

A view still exists that using protection somehow reduces clarity and fidelity of sound, whereas the truth is that high volumes are actually likely to dull the hearing faculties and reduce sensitivity to the full spectrum of musical sounds.

Peter Wilson, an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health specialist in noise safety comments, "People think that earplugs ruin the quality of the music they hear. This is wrong, and it actually makes it easier for you to hear people who are talking to you while music is playing. It's also a myth that louder is best, as our ears actually become numb to certain levels of sound when it's played at a higher volume, meaning you appreciate it less.

"One extra dose can be all it takes to begin a lifetime of hearing problems, and while people might think the things they do now aren't having an impact, later in life they could find they become partially deaf. That does apply to the crowd too, but for unprotected staff the likelihood becomes so much higher they're the people we really want to reach."

But it is not only music professionals who risk their hearing and a future tinnitus claim by failing to take safety steps, those in the entertainment, hotel and leisure industry are also frequently exposed to loud music that, over time, has the potential to damage hearing.
