Taking enjoyment in music after hearing loss -
and claiming compensation

Suffering hearing loss, whether through work or not, may often be thought to have damaged or destroyed the sufferer's ability to appreciate and enjoy music, but this is not necessarily so.

Even if we leave aside the example of Beethoven, as the causes of his deafness are debated and his relation to music is clearly exceptional, there are ways in which an industrial deafness sufferer can continue to find pleasure in music.

The first way that is often suggested is a hearing aid. For some, this is a viable solution, but some have found that the effect of hearing music through a hearing aid is very different from hearing it before industrial hearing loss occurred - one sufferer, a musician, described the difference as being powerful enough to cause him to panic.

If a sufferer chooses not to experience music through an aid, then, another solution offered is the one that people who have suffered with profound and early deafness choose - to learn to appreciate it in a different way.

Drums and bass rhythms can be picked up from floor vibrations, for example, and where a hearing-impaired music producer talks about using the visual cues of people dancing, a classical musician agrees, saying "you can see the expressions on players' faces and the way they move on their instruments. This is when I feel most connected with music."

It is also possible to find sign language used for singing, as in this example, using 'Son of a Preacher Man'.
