In all industrial sectors noise-induced hearing loss is consistently the occupational disease which sees the largest occurrences of compensation claims. It accounts for approximately 75 percent of all occupational disease claims and deafness from factory work remains a prolific cause of hearing loss amongst workers.
Textile factories and deafness
The textile industry is recognised as one manufacturing sector where required machinery can produce high and excessive noise levels. Certain processes such as weaving and Worsted preparation using gilling machines can produce noise levels in excess of 95 decibels.
The noise level at which it is recommended that hearing protection is worn is 85 decibels. It is compulsory for employers to provide hearing protection if noise levels reach or exceed 90 decibels.
Under section 5 (1) of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, an employer whose business is liable to expose employees to noise at or above recommended exposure values must make suitable and sufficient risk assessment to ensure the health and safety of those employees. The risk assessment must identify measures which need to be taken to meet the Regulation's requirements.
The Textiles Industry Advisory Committee has worked with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to secure the commitment of employers and employees to improve the use of hearing protection in the industry so as to reduce the numbers of claims made as a result of deafness from factory work.
