In situations where there is excessive noise in the workplace, as defined by the Noise at Work Regulations, the hearing of workers may suffer to such an extent that a deafness compensation claim becomes necessary. However, damage to a person's hearing is not the only adverse effect that can be caused by noise in the workplace; unremitting noise may also increase stress, reduce communication and ultimately even damage the mental health of employees.
Unfortunately, for those people who have found that their mental health and/or productivity has suffered as a result of intrusive noise, there is, despite being some precedent in US law, little scope thus far for receiving compensation for this in the UK.
There is however, plenty of evidence to suggest that even low-level noise can a negative impact on both mental health and cognitive ability.
One study, carried out by American researchers, highlighted the effects of noise on the ability to perform cognitive tasks. After exposing a group of children to persistent noise, they found that both the group's reading ability and capacity to remember were significantly impaired.
Another study, performed by scientists at Cornell University, discovered that subjecting a group of office workers to persistent low-level noise increased employee stress levels, as indicated by raised levels of epinedrine, while also reducing motivation.
Although these might seem like short-term effects, persistent stress can have long-lasting consequences. This is because the presence of high levels of stress hormones has a strong association with an increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, lowered immunity and heart disease. Significantly, another Cornell University study also found that workplace noise made workers less likely to make ergonomic adjustments to their workstations, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and repetitive strain injuries.
In short, although low-level noise in the workplace might not make employers liable for deafness injury compensation claims, it does have an impact on the both the health of workers and an organization's productivity, so it is surely in the interests of all parties that employers provide a peaceful and placid working environment.
