Tinnitus, The Hum and deafness compensation

A deafness compensation claim can be made if your hearing damage has been caused by excessive noise levels in the workplace. Sometimes the damage manifests as tinnitus - a constant ringing or humming which does not alleviate even after noise sources have gone.

Noise induced hearing loss can be measured during a hearing test and may mean that the sufferer will need a hearing aid.

Deafness compensation claims and 'The Hum'
A report in the Daily Mail Online in 2009 told the harrowing experience of a woman affected by "The Hum" - a sensitivity to low frequency noises such as hums and drones caused by all sorts of sources; from factories, machinery and transport to household appliances such as boilers and fridges. It can even emanate from the sea.

Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) have produced a report on such low frequency noise and suggest that the effects can have serious consequences for a sufferer; headaches, depression, stress, sleeplessness, disruption to relationships, and even one case of suicide, have all been attributed by people who could hear The Hum.

Crystal Rolfe, an audiology specialist from the Royal National Institute for The Deaf (RNID) said that noise sensitivity can be a very distressing condition which affects around one in ten people in Britain at some point in their lives and that determining what is causing the noise and why it is happening can be a difficult task.

"If the noise is everywhere, it's probably tinnitus. If it goes away when you're in certain areas, the problem could be external," said Rolfe.

In 2008, the team at Defra launched a course called Coping With Noise for people affected by The Hum or the constant ringing associated with tinnitus. The course used psychology and relaxation techniques to help the cohort feel less agitated.
