Mining is an industry that has long been associated with industrial diseases such as vibration white finger and deafness compensation claims after workers have suffered noise induced hearing loss.
Coal mining has been a predominant factor in personal injury compensation cases, but in the winter of 2009 a different mining industry hit headlines in the UK. As the weather worsened and spells of snow and ice hit the country, the need for "road grit" was highlighted.
Rock salt used in road gritting is mined from ancient salt deposits underground. UK mines are situated in Cleveland, County Antrim, and Cheshire, and workers in such mines could be exposed to high levels of noise if not properly protected.
There are two main types of rock salt mining technique used in the UK:
Cut and blast mining
A machine called an undercutter creates a slot at the base of the rock face, and a series of holes are drilled using an electro-hydraulic rotary drill. Explosives are placed into the holes and the face is blasted. The rock salt is then broken and crushed by a feeder-breaker, followed by a further crusher that sieves and screens so that the rock salt is ready to be used for road de-icing.
Continuous mining
A boring machine, similar to a pneumatic road drill is used to dig into the salt. Its rotating heads carry tungsten-carbide tips that produce smaller lumps of salt than in blast mining, these are then taken directly to a crushing and screening plant where it is made ready to be used on roads.

Industrial deafness
Both these mining techniques use machinery and processes that carry great risk of noise induced hearing loss; large scale mining machinery, crushing processes and blasting all have the capability to damage hearing unless employers follow strict health and safety regulations and provide their employees with adequate training and hearing protection.
If you have sustained noise induced hearing loss as a result of inadequate action by your employer, you may be eligible to make a compensation claim. We will then provide you with an experienced and specialised personal injury solicitor who will guide you personally throughout your claim for compensation.
