Scientists in late 2009 discovered a gene associated with a rare form of progressive deafness in males. While the discovery is specific to a certain form of inherited deafness, its findings may help with treatment for conductive hearing loss and other forms of acquired deafness.
The gene they found is known as PRPS1, which is significant for inner ear development and maintenance. The gene is associated with DFN2, a progressive form of deafness that primarily affects males.
Boys with the disease lose their hearing in both ears roughly between the ages of five and 15, and over the course of several decades, will suffer hearing loss that can range from severe to profound deafness.
The gene was discovered by a team of international researchers funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Their findings showed that the PRPS1 gene encodes the enzyme phophoribosylpyrophosphate (PRPP) synthetase 1, which produces and regulates PRPP (phosphor-ribosylpyrophosphate) and plays a major role in inner ear development and maintenance.
When this gene mutates, the sensory cells or hair cells in the inner ear can become defective which eventually leads to progressive deafness. James F.Battey, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., director of the NIDCD concluded: "This discovery offers exciting therapeutic implications.
"Not only does it give scientists a way to develop a targeted treatment for hearing loss in boys with this disorder, it may also open doors to the treatment of other types of deafness, including some forms of acquired hearing loss."
These findings do therefore provide hope for those who have suffered tinnitus or industrial deafness as treatments stemming from these findings may be found in the near future.
If you have suffered from conductive hearing loss as a result of your work, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim for your personal injury.
