Although there is no known cure for industrial deafness and tinnitus, there are several different therapies which some sufferers have found to be effective. Often a result of poor working practices, employees who have suffered hearing damage from their place of work can claim compensation for industrial deafness.
Around five million Britons suffer from tinnitus which is a condition characterized by a noise in the ear which has no obvious cause. The severity of the problem can vary with some sufferers only experiencing symptoms for a short amount of time to those who experience it permanently.
Tinnitus can therefore severely affect a sufferer's concentration and mood as it can make everyday situations such as working or holding a conversation, difficult.
Finding an effective therapy to relieve the condition is therefore vital. Meditation, known for its ability to help de-stress those who practice it, has been found to be helpful for some tinnitus sufferers.
Also used to treat anxiety and depression, a particular form of meditation is being used to treat tinnitus by teaching patients to stop and confront their thoughts and worries about the noise. This differs from most other techniques which aim to distract patients from the noise through sound therapy.
The meditation technique however encourages patients to gradually come to terms with the tinnitus and 'detune' from it allowing them to notice the problem less and less.
While psychologists are keen to stress that the technique does not cure the underlying nerve damage in the inner ear responsible for tinnitus, there is evidence to suggest it does lead to changes in brain function which stops the patient noticing the buzzing or ringing noise.
Unlike conventional meditation, patients are taught to "observe" their thoughts, including their worries about tinnitus. The brain is constantly evaluating noise in order to work out which sounds are important, and which can be ignored. The theory is that by encouraging patients to accept their worries about the noise, the brain will eventually ignore the sounds.
The technique has been pioneered at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in London which has been using the therapy since 2008. Jo Blaquiere, a hearing therapist at the hospital commented, "It's not for everyone. But some people find it a powerful technique for coping."
