The teaching profession and claims for tinnitus

The vast majority people who undertake a claim for tinnitus work in traditionally noise-hazardous industries such as shipbuilding, mining, music or road maintenance work.

However, teaching is one profession that is much more hazardous to hearing than is commonly believed. In fact, the rate of tinnitus among teachers is much higher than it is among workers in many heavy industries.

In 2011 the Danish Institute for the Work Environment carried out a study into tinnitus among the teaching profession. Amazingly, it found that the incidence of the condition among teachers was actually higher than it was for abattoir workers, farm workers and machinists (one the most tinnitus-prone of all professions).

The study found that the rate of the condition among male teachers is 84% higher than it is for workers in other jobs – it also found that female daycare workers were at a very high risk of the condition, while female nursery workers are 1.13 times more likely to develop the deafness-related condition than workers in other occupations.

Action for Tinnitus Research believe that the plight of teachers shows us that we must not typecast tinnitus as a condition that affects only workers in heavy industries. "Tinnitus used to be considered the domain of the elderly, the manual worker and the music industry, and the more evidence that is collected, the more we are realising that this simply isn't true," says a spokesperson with the group.

He adds, "Musicians, machinists and industrial workers aren't the only ones suffering from tinnitus. It is estimated that around five million people in the UK suffer from tinnitus, however the figure could be even higher if professions like teaching are starting to suffer the symptom. This worrying research stresses why we desperately need more funds to research tinnitus and find a cure or treatment."
