Trying to prove caffeine is bad for tinnitus claimants

Caffeine is widely held to have a negative impact on the symptoms that may lead to a tinnitus claim, but the scientific evidence to back up this belief is not yet conclusive. A study undertaken by Bristol University intends to examine this belief under scientific conditions.

Funded in part by Deafness Research UK, the study is to examine the results of treating caffeine-consuming tinnitus sufferers who are willing to give up the stimulant during the trial. Questionnaires are issued to the participants, who will not know whether the researchers are issuing them with caffeine or not.

The examination of these results should lead to an understanding of whether the withdrawal of the stimulant is a valuable treatment for the industrial deafness symptom, and whether reintroduction of the substance makes symptoms worse. The double-blind status of the trial should also ensure scientific objectivity.

On receiving the funding, the lead researcher said, "we are delighted to have the opportunity to carry out a study that has the potential to be of help to so many people. We are particularly keen that people with tinnitus should only go through the trouble of withdrawing from caffeine, if it can be shown that this is of real benefit to them".

The research is unlikely to distinguish between those who suffer the condition as a result of industrial deafness and acoustic shock and those who have developed the condition under other circumstances.
