Although it is often thought of as a condition associated with noisy factories, tinnitus has proven to be a threat to military servicemen.
A 2008 report from the Times newspaper, which made a successful Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of Defence, detailed the numbers of UK troops serving in Afghanistan who had suffered hearing loss in the line of duty, and how that duty often led soldiers to remove earplugs that would protect their hearing against the noise of battle because they are felt to reduce awareness of orders and activity around the unit.
American cases of military hearing loss were estimated to carry a billion-dollar price tag by 2011 in a 2006 report, when the levels of damages awarded in personal injury claims were already over $500 million.
Closer to home, Irish Army professionals were involved in hearing loss compensation claims against their government. Many cases were settled out of court, with only a few being heard in court; millions of euros were paid out in compensation to thousands of soldiers who had not had their hearing sufficiently protected.
If earplugs are removed, this may be held to introduce the question of whether the soldiers were contributing to the damage to their hearing, or whether the Army had not given sufficient instruction on the necessity to use the protective gear.
A spokesperson for the RNID said "If the current earplugs are not providing adequate protection, RNID would welcome working with the MoD and with soldiers to explore better ways of ensure hearing protection and of raising awareness."
