Acoustic shock in the workplace

The ear is a hugely important piece of equipment made up of many small and delicate parts. So delicate, in fact, are the workings of the ear that one instance of damage can result in a lifetime's hearing loss.

Such damage can often occur through acoustic shock syndrome, a common yet little known about condition that is caused by a loud and sudden noise. Sometimes this noise can be completely unavoidable, for example being involved in a terrorist bomb blast, but usually it is possible to take precautions against being exposed.

compensation claim, acoustic shockHere at YouClaim we receive hundreds of calls every year from people who have suffered hearing damage through acoustic shock when an employer has failed to provide them with adequate ear protection.

They contact us because we have a panel of expert personal injury solicitors who can pursue acoustic shock compensation claims on a no win, no fee basis at absolutely no cost, win or lose, and they know that they can take advantage of our excellent success rate.

Our team have helped many people from all over the UK to claim damages for acoustic shock and below are the stories of just two of those who we've helped:

ML from Yorkshire
36-year-old foundry worker ML was involved in an accident at work that left him with hearing loss in his right ear. The incident in question was an explosion that was caused when a propane gas cylinder was knocked over by an employee who hadn't received a proper safety induction.

Most of the foundry workers managed to get out of the building before the explosion took place but ML was unable to. Miraculously, he was spared any burn injuries but the noise of the blast did leave a tremendous ringing in his right ear. After a day, the ringing disappeared but he found that he was left unable to hear a thing and tests later showed that he was completely deaf in his right ear.

Understandably upset by this development, he contacted YouClaim and asked us to help him make a compensation claim against his employers. One of our panel of personal injury solicitors, an expert in the area of acoustic shock, pursued the case and ML was awarded work accident compensation of £24,000.

Winning these damages hadn't cost him a single penny and he kept 100% of the damages. Later, he politely wrote to us to say, "I was really impressed with the way you handled my situation at what was a really difficult time for me Thanks so much."

KJ from Essex
KJ was a 29-year-old call centre operative who contacted us in the summer of 2005 after suffering acoustic shock whilst at work. Her job involved cold calling homeowners with the aim of selling them an insurance product and she was often shouted at by those whom she rang.

Fed up the with loud abuse that she was getting on a daily basis, she asked her boss to provide her with a headset that could be moved away from the ear instantly if the noise at the other end of the line got too great. He told her that this was not possible and so she had to continue using the headset that was secured to her head and constantly covered her ear.

Several weeks after having her request turned down, she rang a potential customer and gave him her sales pitch. As she was talking to him, he blew a whistle directly into the phone, giving her an enormous shock and leaving her with a distinct earache.

This earache eventually disappeared but KJ was left with reduced hearing in one ear and so decided to seek legal advice. She called YouClaim, telling us about the incident, and we promised to make a compensation claim on her behalf.

An industrial deafness specialist on our panel of personal injury solicitors pursued the claim and KJ received £14,000 in work injury compensation. She kept the entire amount and a trip to court wasn't even necessary because her employer admitted full responsibility for allowing the acoustic shock to happen.
