Mobile phone usage and risks of acoustic shock

Acoustic shock is the name given to the ear injury caused by a sudden high-frequency, high-intensity noise received through telecommunications equipment. Although it is generally considered to be a condition related to land lines, it is possible to suffer the condition as a result of using a mobile phone.

Just as with land lines, the threat of hearing loss being caused by network faults or malicious noises such as whistles being blown is present. While the potential for a person to accidentally use a fax machine to dial a mobile number may well be lower, as very few fax receivers are connected to mobiles, this reduction in risk is matched by the increased risk of mobile signal interference.

The growing use of mobile phone headsets, whether wired or Bluetooth, may also increase the risk of suffering hearing loss, as the reflex action of moving the phone away from the ear is replaced with a slower motion of removing the earpiece.

It is the use of headsets and earpieces that lead call centre employees to be considered the most at risk of this form of industrial hearing loss, but if the use of a mobile phone headset is part of a sufferer's work, it may be possible to mount a compensation claim on this basis should that employee suffer from acoustic shock. The possibility of this will, however, vary from situation to situation and the opinion of an industrial deafness solicitor should be sought.
