When an industrial accident occurs in any workplace the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) must be notified under RIDDOR.
RIDDOR stands for The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995, and under these regulations employers, self-employed workers and those in control of premises have a legal duty to report work-related deaths, major injuries or over-three-day-injuries, work-related diseases and dangerous occurrences (near miss accidents).
Any of these incidents can be reported to the Incident Contact Centre (ICC) which offers a "one stop" reporting service for accidents at work in the UK. It is primarily a call centre that was established in 2001, where operators are available to take health and safety incident reports between 8.30am and 5.00pm on 0845 300 99 23.
When a reportable incident occurs, the person with responsibility, usually the employer or person in charge of the premises must keep all appropriate records and report the details to the ICC. The quickest way to do this is over the phone; the ICC Consultant will ask all necessary questions and take down the relevant details. There is no need to fill in a form and the phone call represents the reporting of the incident.
The report will then be passed to the related enforcing authority. A copy of the industrial accident report will be sent to the responsible person at the workplace and this must be kept on file with any other records of the incident. This will then fulfil RIDDOR requirements.
Reporting can also be completed over the internet by filling in an interactive form online. A copy for your records is generated and sent automatically.
The ICC can also be contacted via e-mail at: riddor@natbrit.com or by post: Incident Contact Centre, Caerphilly Business Park, Caerphilly, CF83 3GG
When contacting the ICC all information remains confidential. For more information visit the HSE website for full RIDDOR details.
