Claiming government benefits after an industrial accident

People who fall victim to an industrial accident often find themselves unable to work, either temporarily or permanently. In the UK, the government offers Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) to those people in an attempt to assist with expenses during this period.

Can IIDB be claimed for any industrial accident?
IIDB is made available, on a sliding scale, with regard to the seriousness of the personal injuries sustained in the industrial accident. There are certain criteria that restrict its availability, including the rule that IIDB is not given for an industrial accident that occurs while self-employed. Also, the accident itself must have occurred in the process of doing the job, rather than, say, while travelling to a usual place of work.

How much is it worth?
The weekly value of IIDB depends on a number of factors, including personal status of the claimant and how serious the results of the industrial accident are. This means that all figures publicised are guidelines rather than definite amounts, but it seems that its highest value is approximately £130 a week, which scales down to little over £16 in other circumstances.

Further information
If a work accident leads to an IIDB claim at the highest level, there are other benefits that could be sought, including Constant Attendance Allowance and Exceptionally Severe Disablement Allowance.

If the claimant's employer was careless or failed to prevent an avoidable accident, there may well be a case to make a compensation claim for a work-related injury.
