Safety advice to avoid an industrial accident on railway tracks

Railway lines in the UK frequently require engineering works to ensure that they are kept in the best working order. All workers who are hired to work on train tracks should be informed of all health and safety regulations to help prevent an industrial accident from happening.

Although many rail maintenance jobs can be undertaken by machines, the presence of workers is still required and they face considerable risks. Infrastructure managers should ensure that they have planned ahead with workers to minimise the chances of an accident at work.

A lot of engineering work is done at night, also known as "engineering hours", when trains are not running, especially on the London Underground when the traction current is discharged.

Network rail use a system known as "green zone working" when staff need to perform tasks while trains are running and either a train line is blocked off to protect employees, or a protected area is set up away from the tracks instead.

However, in some circumstances it is not possible to block off a train line and employees may have to work on lines that have trains running on them. This is known as "red zone working" and employees are warned when a train is approaching so that they have sufficient time to vacate the area and ensure that they are in a position of safety when the train passes.

Rail track maintenance workers may have a variety of different duties to perform which can include measuring tracks, installing and renewing tracks, inspecting tracks for defects, reporting accidents and incidents, reporting and clearing potential obstacles and carrying out site surveys.

Employees may be required to use heavy machinery to carry out major repairs to a railway line, and it is imperative that they are taught how to use the use the equipment correctly and that they are given appropriate protection for using the machinery. For example, all workers should wear high visibility clothing, hard hats and safety boots.
