In 2010, the UK public saw mesothelioma claim yet another life. Although the asbestos-related condition kills hundreds in the UK each year, very few deaths receive as much attention as that of Malcolm McLaren, "Godfather of punk" and former manager of the Sex Pistols.
Tellingly, it is thought that McLaren developed the cancer as a result of disturbing asbestos in the ceiling of the shop he used to own with his former partner Vivienne Westwood, when, in the punk tradition, he deliberately vandalised it in the 1970s.
His partner at death, Young Kim, commented, "When Malcolm created Sex he broke open the ceiling to make it look like a bomb had hit it. I always suspected that shop because it was the only place Malcolm ever really spent any serious length of time in, and there was a lot of construction and changing things.
"Then Ben Westwood said his mother had mentioned that she'd seen asbestos there. It was board asbestos and it was in the early Seventies so there was a lot of it left, and I don't think anyone really did anything about it."
Unfortunately for McLaren's surviving family, the fact that his cancer may have been caused by his vandalism may complicate any mesothelioma claim they decide to make.
However, McLaren's death did prompt a great of discussion about the dangers of asbestos, bringing the issue, if only for a few days, right to the forefront of the public consciousness, helping out this "hidden killer".
