When we spend our hard-earned money on an item such as a hot water bottle we expect that it will have undergone rigorous safety testing and that it will be free from the risk of causing us personal injury. Because of this, in the event we suffer the pain and misfortune of being injured by such a product, we are entitled to make a product liability claim for compensation.
Boots hot water bottle recall
Fears of consumer personal injuries and subsequent product liability claims led high street chemist Boots to issue a recall of hot water bottles manufactured between October 2005 and January 2007.
The company asked consumers with the affected hot water bottles, which were coloured blue, cream or red and had "05" moulded on the inner circle, to return them to their nearest store so that they could be provided with a suitable, and safe, replacement.
The company admitted that the hot water bottles could split and cause consumers to suffer painful scalding injuries.
Boots Microwarmer recall
The same high street chemist also issued a recall of a product called the Boots Microwarmer. This was because the product, which is similar to a hot water bottle but smaller, also carried a risk of splitting or bursting and causing injuries and injury compensation claims.
According to the chemist, the product, which was sold between 1997 and 1999, deteriorates over time and becomes increasingly hazardous. Customers were advised to return the Microwarmer to their nearest Boots store for a full refund.
A personal injury solicitor's view
Personal injury solicitor firm YouClaim says that it is recalls and public information campaigns by apparently honest and accountable companies such as Boots that help the public remain protected from the dangers of unsafe products.
"Unscrupulous sellers and retailers, as well as those that are lax in their safety standards, are those that put the public at risk of suffering avoidable personal injuries."
