When holiday accidents occur during scuba diving

Scuba diving is a popular pastime in some destinations, but if not done safely it can result in holiday accidents spoiling a trip. In the most serious cases, this can result in fatal personal injury befalling a diver.

Fortunately, such serious holiday injury is rare; statistics show, for example, that severe decompression sickness (or "the bends") only occurs in 3 out of 10,000 dives, or 0.03% of cases. This is, of course, little comfort for any family who suffers as a result of one of these infrequent cases.

There are known risk factors for the condition, which any reputable dive organiser should be aware of. These include fillings, sinusitis and a history of allergies, in terms of the diver, and the condition, depth and temperature of the water to be dived in.

Other risks are also present, of course; divers may collide with rocks, causing personal injury, or may be bitten or stung by various underwater creatures. If this results in toxins or poisons entering the bloodstream of a diver, this may result in unpleasant effects; if so, and if the dive organiser was negligent in ascertaining the safety of the area of sea to dive in, a compensation claim may be an appropriate course of action for the injured party.

Symptoms of scuba injury generally involve pain, but can also manifest as difficulty breathing, anaphylactic shock or excessive gas in the digestive tract.
