Holiday accidents and a leading aviation body

The International Air Transport Association is a leading trade and safety organisation, representing 230 airlines and around 93% of all aviation traffic. Naturally, the stature and influence of the organisation means it is able to play significant part in understanding the scale and nature of aeroplane holiday accidents.

Part of the IATA's mission is to promote the benefits of flight over other forms of travel. Therefore it has a strong interest in ensuring that accidents and passenger injuries are kept to an absolute minimum.

One aspect of this commitment to safety is performed by the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). The IOSA only started five years ago but it has fast gained recognition as the international standard in safety evaluation.

A complete list of IOSA registered airlines can be found here.

The IATA also delivers a yearly safety performance review of the aviation industry. 2008, the most recent update available, shows that there has been a drop in the number of plane accident passenger deaths, from 692 in 2007 to 502 in 2008.

However, the same figures reveal that there has been a rise in the number of non-fatal aviation holiday accidents. But with the accident rate standing at one incident every 1.2 million flights, it is clear that the plane remains a much safer option than almost all other forms of travel.

Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO of IATA, comments, "Safety is the industry's number one priority. Today's statistics confirm that travelling by air is one the safest things that a person can do."

He also used news of the statistics to issue a warning to any member airlines that fail to meet IOSA standards. "IATA is a quality association. And the mark of that quality is safety. While we will be strict in upholding the IOSA standards, which are recognised by governments around the world, our goal is to raise the bar on safety with a transparent global standard and bring all of our members on board," he said.
