Avalanche holiday accidents in Scotland

A snow-related holiday accident will not necessarily occur outside of Britain. For, although claims for skiing injuries suffered on the slopes of continental Europe may be one of the holidaymaker cases most frequently dealt with by no win, no fee solicitors, there are real and pressing snow-related holiday hazards here in the UK too.

For example, during the heavy snowfall of early 2009, Sport Scotland's Avalanche Information Service cautioned holidaymakers visiting the Cairngorms that the danger of an avalanche holiday accident was "considerable".

Mark Diggins, from the Avalanche Information Service, warned, "The snow pack is unstable in the Cairngorms and there are weaknesses which we have been monitoring over the lead-up to half-term. Currently the avalanche risk is considerable.

"The temperatures at the moment are very cold, which means that any weaknesses in the snow pack will remain and more will develop.

"I would urge people to look carefully at the avalanche report and to incorporate that information into their daily plans and activities, whether it is hill-walking, climbing or skiing off-piste, because if they go to the wrong place they will be avalanched."

Indeed, he said that the likelihood of this particular hazard is often underestimated, "They occur relatively frequently. Just in the past week there have been four reported in the North Cairngorms, and no doubt more we are unaware of, but no-one got hurt so no-one gets to know about them usually. The quartet all had the potential to be deadly.

"There is a misconception that avalanches do not occur here, and if they do then they are an Act of God or it's a freak accident and people are unlucky.

"That's not the case. The information is out there to identify where there is a risk, what aspects and altitudes, and people should plan accordingly.

"There are always places to go, and the most important thing is to be prepared to change their plans."
