Children's activity holidays can be great fun, providing your child with the opportunity to enjoy new experiences and the chance to gain some independence. However, children are forever getting themselves into trouble so to prevent holiday accidents, it is essential that the holiday provider carries out comprehensive risk assessments to ensure that all dangers are kept to a minimum.
In July 2009, a 17-year-old school boy from Lincolnshire died after falling 1,000ft while on a poorly-planned Spanish walking holiday for teenagers. The group of young explorers were on an expedition in the Picos De Europa Mountains in northern Spain at the time of the accident.
None of the leaders or walkers on the expedition were familiar with the area and the group were only equipped with a small scale map and out of date guidebook.
Any experienced walker will tell you of the importance of good preparation and the need for local knowledge when walking in an unfamiliar area. Had the group researched the area more thoroughly, they would have been aware of the mountain's reputation for its extremely dangerous cliff tops and sheer edges.
The incident happened when the schoolboy wandered away from the main group who had taken a break to enjoy a sunset. The 17-year-old's absence went unnoticed for around 40 minutes. He was found to have fallen down a sheer cliff face but it remains unknown why he fell. He had been wearing sandals at the time of his death so it is possible that he slipped.
The coroner who examined the incident said that there were "deficiencies" in the way the expedition had been planned from the outset. Speaking of the way the expedition was organised the coroner commented,
"It is absolutely clear to me that this location was potentially extremely hazardous," he said. "It was very dangerous.
He also added that the risk assessment carried out had not been sufficient and did not take account the age and experience of the participants.
This demonstrates how necessary risk assessments and good preparations are for the prevention of accidents on holiday.
