Don't be all at sea after a holiday accident

Cruises have become a popular way of taking a relaxing break, and not just for the rich and famous, but as the ships and itineraries have become more numerous so have the opportunities for a holiday accident.

Cruise liners have been getting bigger and bigger throughout the last 20 years as demand for this type of holiday has grown and sometimes those on board feel as if they are in a huge hotel or indoor resort and are not even aware of being at sea.

The companies behind these huge vessels have asked their designers to think of everything when it comes to accommodation, services and leisure facilities so there are sports areas, swimming pools, bars, dance floors, shops and restaurants as well as comfortable cabins of all sizes.

Because these are similar to large hotels, liners have the same type of holiday hazard but with one or two extra possible risks to passengers of illness or personal injury.

For example, there is the usual need to be aware of the potential for slips, trips and falls but these are made worse by the motion of the ship and the chance of an unexpectedly large wave causing a passenger injury by throwing them off their feet.

A sport injury or swimming accident could occur if there is insufficient supervision of the fitness areas or an unexpected hazard. Also scalds could occur from hot water taps or spilt hot drinks and food and, of course, in an unfamiliar setting, it is easy to suffer an injury from knocking into a protruding piece of furniture, for instance.

Illness can be just as much of a worry for a cruise passenger and not only sea sickness. Due to the enclosed environment of a liner, germs can travel easily and be re-circulated, which is what happens when there is an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug or norovirus.

A lack of hygiene precautions may increase the spread of the illness and if a passenger has a weakened immune system they may become very ill. This will spoil the holiday as well as upsetting their health.

A more serious illness, which can cause death in extreme circumstances, is Legionnaires disease which spreads through dirty water and air conditioning systems. If a cruise liner has not been well maintained, there could be a case for someone who has contracted this disease to make a claim for compensation against the liner's operators.
