Holiday accident risk - are you safe when on a personal watercraft?

If you are planning to take part in water sports on your holidays this year then be careful not to get yourself involved in a holiday accident for which you may have to make a no win, no fee claim.

holiday accident, no win no feeYouClaim has illustrated the importance of safety measures when it comes to water sports on many occasions but a terrible accident involving a nine-year-old girl, which happened in the US, really brings home the point.

On 26th May 2007 the young girl was riding on her family's Sea-Doo (like a Jet Ski) at Indian lake, Worcester, US when the vehicle collided with another personal watercraft. The nine-year-old suffered a serious head injury for which she received surgery and, even now, she remains on a breathing apparatus in a critical condition. It has not yet been reported whether her parents will be making a no win, no fee compensation claim on her behalf.

These water bound vehicles may be designed for fun and known for their power, manoeuvrability and ability of reaching a speed of 70mph, but the experience of this family has shown that there is indeed a very sobering side to water sports.

While there are some holiday makers that will go out on jet skis with good intentions and safety in mind, there are others who will clown around and put themselves and others at risk of serious personal injury. Jumping the wakes of other boats, riding at speed, coming too close to shore swimmers and chasing each other in tight circles are just some of the dangerous acts that watercraft drivers frequently carry out. There can be little sympathy for these hell-raisers when they cause holiday accidents and have no win, no fee claims made against them.

It is estimated that although Jet Ski accidents don't statistically count for a large quantity of holiday accidents there are actually many more occurring. Education coordinator for an Environmental Police in the US, Jack A Mason, has commented, "We estimate, at tops, 10 percent of (all boating) accidents get reported. There are a lot of accidents that are legally supposed to be reported by state statutes that are not."

At present, state regulations permit those aged 18 and above to operate personal watercrafts without having received official training. However, those aged 16 and 17 are allowed to operate them only after they have passed a certificate from an accredited boating safety course.

State Environmental Police Sgt. Walker added, "Most boat operators aren't educated [about boating]. They don't know the rules of the road and the nature of the body of water they are on."

This is indeed the case and inexperienced, unqualified tourists who are looking for a laugh when they visit foreign waters are the cause of both many a holiday accident and many a subsequent no win, no fee claim. Just make sure that you are cautious when taking part in water sports or swimming near to those on Jet Skis
