Holiday accidents and YouClaim checklist for driving abroad

A holiday accident can be a frightening experience, not least because you may not understand local laws and regulations, and the language barrier could also be a distinct problem.

If you intend driving abroad then there are several very pertinent items to think about before you leave the UK.

Car insurance
Always check with your insurer before you take your car abroad, as there may well be automatic changes to your policy once out of the UK. If you are planning to drive in non-EU countries you should ask about obtaining a Green Card, which acts as proof of insurance.

If you are hiring a car abroad, always check what cover you are getting and what restrictions apply. If necessary you should buy a top-up policy to extend the cover being offered.

In the event of an accident
If the police become involved and you do not understand the language try to ask for an interpreter.

In countries outside the European Union you should be aware that Police may be responsible for determining driver fault at the scene of the accident. In the event of a serious accident this can lead to drivers being arrested and their vehicles being impounded in order to allow time for proper determination of fault.

If you are arrested you should ask tocontact the British Consul or equivalent as soon as possible.
