After the explosion of the volcano in Iceland in April 2010, many British holidaymakers were stranded around the world with no way of returning home. As well as the cost of extending their accommodation, many tourists potentially faced expensive medical bills for personal injuries as their holiday insurance cover period ran out making any holiday accident not compensable.
With all the flights into Britain cancelled for nearly a week due to safety concerns following the volcanic ash clouds enveloping the UK, thousands of British tourists were left stranded in Europe desperately trying to find a way home. Due to the sheer number of holidaymakers trying to leave Europe after their Easter holidays, the ferries and Eurotunnel services all had long waits on available spaces meaning that many Brits faced waits of several weeks before they would be able to return home.
However, with schools short of teachers and many workers stuck on the continent, the government decided to take action to help bring stranded UK residents home. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered the Royal Navy warship HMS Albion to help bring armed forces personnel home as well as a number of civilians that had been staying around Santander.
While the Royal Navy vessel was only able to carry a limited number of stranded tourists on board, over 2000 passengers were treated to a ride on board the Celebrity Eclipse which postponed its inaugural celebrations to rescue those stuck abroad.
The tourists the cruise liner helped return home had endured overnight coach journeys of up to 16 hours to get to the northern Spanish port. Boasting no less than 10 restaurants, a half acre lawn made of real grass, a cinema, an art gallery, several swimming pools and a jogging deck, the tourists might even have decided it was worth getting stranded to spend time on the £1,200-a-week luxury liner.
With the Royal Navy and cruise companies joining together to help rescue the stranded Brits, many likened the scenario to the Dunkirk evacuation during WWII. With British tourist's money and holiday accident insurance quickly running out, the Royal Navy and the cruise liners helped divert what was beginning to turn into a disaster for Brits abroad.
