Make sure to take precautions when holidaying
In addition to the risk of personal injury and the worry of having to make a holiday accident claim after travelling to foreign parts, young people are also being warned that they should be especially careful about who they choose to share a holiday romance with.
According to Dr Karen Rogstad of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, many young people are resistant to the idea of using condoms when embarking on intimate relations with total strangers they meet on holiday.
Cases of chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea and genital herpes are all increasing and between 2000 and 2002 the rise in such infections was of particular worry:
Sixty nine percent of men who acquired HIV in heterosexual relationships were infected while abroad.
One fifth of syphilis infections in male heterosexuals are a result of holiday romances.
Nine percent of people with gonorrhoea reported sleeping with someone abroad in the preceding three months.
In response to the results, Dr Rogstad commented, "Holidays are increasingly being taken abroad and in far flung locations, and the number of UK residents travelling abroad has increased by 27% since 1997.
"Preventative advice should be offered to all holidaymakers, particularly those going to the developing world."
She added, "Young people should be encouraged to seek health screening on return from holiday."
People are thought to be more adventurous and carefree when holidaying, especially when they are more relaxed and the alcohol is flowing more freely. Those under the age of 25 are thought to be the group most likely to become intimate with strangers and risk sustaining a holiday disease.
This is one holiday accident claim that you could not make as any disease or illness caught as a result of intimate relations would essentially be a holidaymaker's own responsibility.
