If you become ill whilst travelling in Europe, or receive personal injury due to someone else's negligence, you may need to make a holiday accident claim to receive compensation. However, when planning a trip you should always make sure you are covered for medical treatment costs while you are away.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the E111 form for European medical provision in 2005. However, holiday makers travelling to the European Economic Area (EAA) or Switzerland are urged to check their EHIC, as if it has expired they may have to pay out unnecessary costs.
As the economic climate worsened in the early part of 2009, various survey results were released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, YouGov and the Department of Health revealing that as many as 50% of British travellers did not realise that their EHIC had an expiry date.
In January 2009, 28 million Britons had an EHIC, but three million were due to have expired by March 2009.
Figures also released showed that as far back as July 2008 British travellers were planning to make budget cuts on their future holiday plans; some were considering not purchasing holiday insurance.
Although the EHIC is free and entitles the holder to state-provided medical treatment within the country they are visiting, to the same standard as would be provided to by a person under the country's "insured medical scheme", it should not be considered an alternative to travel insurance.
The EHIC can be used in the event of illness or holiday accident, but not if you are travelling to receive a medical procedure as the reason for your trip. It will not cover you for repatriation (return home after an accident or treatment), loss of baggage, or losses due to crime or natural disaster.
