Holiday accident claims for injuries sustained on the ski slopes are among those most commonly make by holidaymakers from the UK. And, although the majority of these are for fractures and sprains, a small but significant proportion are for head injuries - around 2%.
However, more than 10,000 skiers still suffer head injuries on the slopes of Europe each year and, for a small minority, some of these will be serious.
In 2008 the danger of skiing-related head injuries finally began to receive the attention it deserves, following a high-profile on-piste collision between a prominent 50-year-old German politician and a 41-year-old mother-of-four.
The politician, who suffered skull and brain injuries, survived, with neurologists attributing this to the fact he was wearing a helmet; while the 41-year-old woman died as a result of sustaining multiple skull injuries, her family have already instructed a firm of lawyers to pursue a holiday accident claim.
This has led to Europe-wide calls for skiers to more seriously consider using a helmet. A spokesperson for the Austrian Skiing Federation comments, "We recommend that all skiers wear helmets, it's not just young children, adults also need protection.
"With the new carving skis, people tend to ski faster these days and they overestimate their own abilities. The slopes are very busy and it's much safer for everyone if you wear a helmet."
The accident has already resulted in a boom in helmet sales. However, it remains to be seen whether European skiers will take to helmet use in the same way Americans have. It can only be hoped that it does not require a catalyst to safety comparable to the ones Americans received with the skiing accident deaths of Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy.
