Holiday accident claims for rail travel while abroad

If you are holidaying abroad it can be attractive to immerse yourself in the local culture by eating at local restaurants or travelling on public transport; however, in some less advanced societies health and safety regulations are not as stringent as they are in the developed world and you may be more likely to be involved in an incident which could require a holiday accident claim.

In India, for instance, one of the cheapest means of travelling around the country is by using the rail network and even today millions of India's inhabitants and visitors to the country travel by train each year rather than attempt to use the nation's roads.

However, what may have seemed like a pleasant train ride can soon turn into a terrible holiday accident as passengers become involved in the many rail accidents which occur on the Indian rail network.

Below are details of some of the major train accidents which have occurred in India over recent years.

  • Sep 9, 2002: Almost 100 passengers killed and 150 hurt when a bogie of Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express plunged into Dhave river in Bihar's Aurangabad district in Eastern India.
  • Jun 22, 2003: 53 killed and 25 injured when Karwar-Mumbai Central Holiday Special train derailed after crossing Vaibhavwadi Station in Sindhudurg district in the western part of Maharashtra.
  • Dec 1, 2006: A portion of a 150-year-old bridge, which was in the process of being dismantled, collapsed over a passing train in Bihar's Bhagalpur district, killing 35 and injuring 17.
  • Aug 1, 2008: A Gautami Express night train, with 360 passengers onboard, caught fire at Warangal, Andhra Pradesh in central India, killing at least 32 passengers.
  • Oct 21, 2009: 22 people were killed and 26 injured when the Goa Express rammed the Mewar Express at Banjana on a section of the Northern Railway in Uttar Pradesh.
  • May 28, 2010: Jyaneshwari Express derailed by insurgents killing at least 148 people.

With the threat of a train accident ruining your holiday in India it may well be wise to either choose another mode of transport or at least to research your route and the safety record of the rail company you would be using.
