Holiday accident claims following cruise ship incidents

People who wish to see many parts of the world during one holiday might choose to book time away on a cruise ship. However, if the owners of the ship do not follow health and safety procedures this could result in holidaymakers pursuing a holiday accident claim.

Often cruise ships travel long distances across open water. The sea and oceans of the world can become extremely rough during storms and the liner may be many miles from land, and aid, throughout most of the journey.

Because of this, it is very important for the wellbeing of the crew and passengers on board that the owners make sure the ship's mechanical parts are functioning well to reduce the possibility of an incident occurring.

Experienced, qualified individuals should undertake this task so that the job is done to the best possible standard and any faults are noted and repaired before the boat leaves its harbour.

Furthermore, for the comfort of the passengers the hygiene levels of the cruise facilities, such as the kitchen areas and the toilets, must be checked and kept to a good standard all the way through the voyage.

Importantly, once the ship has been checked for any faults, mended in any areas which need attention, and prepared for the arrival of holidaymakers, the maximum number of people that the ship can safely hold must not be exceeded.

Overloading a ship could result in an accident and cause crew members and passengers personal injury or even death.

In July 2011 the Russian cruise vessel Svetlana Inyakina sank during a voyage, resulting in 122 fatalities, due to a broken engine and extreme overloading of the ship.

The general director of the company and the river fleet inspector both faced charges of providing unsafe services.

This tragedy, which killed more than half of the people who had been on board as paying customers, could have been avoided if maintenance and other safety checks and regulations had been followed correctly.
