Holiday accidents and cruise liner disappearances

Passengers waiting to embark on a cruise ship holiday usually expect an unforgettable trip of sea, entertainment and luxury. Unfortunately, holidays don't always go to plan and if a passenger sustains a personal injury, they often decide to pursue a holiday accident claim.

However, a report in 2011 revealed a much more sinister type of incident which occurs on cruise ships journeys.

The U.S.-based International Cruise Victims Association stated in 2011 that 165 people have gone missing from cruise vessels since 1995, with 12 of these happening in same year in which the report was published.

Strangely, many of the disappearances have no sensible explanation, leaving loved ones of the vanished devastated and confused. They are unable to grieve or move on as they don't know how the victim has been taken from their lives.

Egyptian cruise disappearance in 2011
In April 2011, a 63-year-old man went on a week-long Egyptian cruise. He sent a text to his wife on the last night to arrange their meeting at the airport the next day.

Yet, just before she left to meet him, she received a call from the holiday company's airport desk in Egypt informing her that her husband had boarded his return flight.

His wife said that suicide was definitely not the case and instead has been left to presume that her husband fell overboard in an unexplained accident.

However, this man's case is not the only one of its kind. A 24-year-old female crew member disappeared from a Disney cruise ship in March 2011. Although her credit card vanished too, it has not been used.

Similarly a 62-year-old German woman mysteriously vanished from a cruise liner in 2007 when it was sailing near Madeira. Her husband has stated that they went to bed together, but when he woke up she was gone.

These incidents are devastating to those affected, but they are very rare and the chance of cruise liner passengers vanishing with no explanation is very small. Nonetheless, holiday-makers still fall victim to a number of holiday accident incidents every year.

Have you been in a holiday accident on board a cruise liner?
The Passenger Shipping Association estimated that 1.7 million cruises would be taken by the British public throughout 2011. Cruise holidays are popular amongst Britons, and many choose to take more than one of these trips in a year.
