Heat stress can lead to serious work accident injury

Heat stress can have serious effects on employees in certain jobs, and can lead to work accident and injury compensation claims or even, in extreme cases, death.

The condition is a result of a person's temperature regulation systems failing, particularly when working in hot conditions. In normal conditions, it is often possible to remove the heat source, but in workplaces such as manufacturing plants, bakeries and laundries this is not possible. Some jobs, such as asbestos removal, also preclude a worker from removing clothes or drinking water during a task, which would otherwise help the body's cooling processes.

Symptoms of heat stress include impaired concentration, headaches, muscle cramps and fainting. Heat stroke, the most severe outcome of the condition, can result in delusions and coma, and can ultimately prove fatal.

As the physical work being done adds heat to the body, it may not be apparent to visitors that heat stress is an issue. This is one reason that the HSE recommends undertaking risk assessments for workplaces where heat stress could be an issue, and - if found to be a threat - providing mechanisms to reduce the heat exposure of workers.

These reduction methods include mechanical assistance to reduce the rate of work, regulation of heat exposure periods, provision of cool water and training staff effectively.

Failure to undertake a risk assessment, or to act on its recommendations, may leave an employer open to a compensation claim.
