As a tool for the prevention of forklift accidents, Harrow Council Environmental Services has produced a Forklift Truck Guide that covers many areas of use, maintenance and safety issues for employers and employees involved in the use of forklift trucks.
The guide says that fork lift trucks (FLTs) are a prominent feature in workplace accident statistics; there are approximately 8,000 FLT accidents annually, resulting in 10 fatalities. Forklift accidents have the potential to endanger human life, inflict serious injury, and to damage buildings, storage systems and stock.
There are over 30 groups of FLT listed by the Association of Industrial Truck Trainers; such as counterbalanced FLT, reach truck, side loader, pedestrian controlled FLT, etc., and each requires its own specific training, certification and risk assessment.

It is the responsibility of employers and management teams to assess and oversee forklift truck operations and to ensure that a safe system of work is implemented and maintained. Subsequent responsibilities for safe use of FLTs will also lie with line managers, supervisors and operators.
