Unfortunately, there is a perception among some politicians, employers, workers and members of the public that the threat of asbestos is now a subject for the history books. However, this is very far from the truth – every day in the UK a worker makes an asbestos claim for an illness such as mesothelioma while another person will be exposed to the deadly asbestos, whether in an industrial setting, on a construction site or in a seemingly benign setting such as a school or office.
Against this background of continuing threat it is hard to understand how any government can consider making cuts to asbestos awareness drives such as the Hidden Killer campaign and Action Mesothelioma Day.
For example, in 2011 it was revealed that the Health and Safety Executive, perhaps the single most influential and important body with a role in preventing asbestos deaths, had had its budget cut by an alarming 35 per cent – this at a time when it was revealed that 70 per cent of British schools still contained asbestos, many of which were at risk of being in disrepair and therefore likely to cause asbestos exposure.
These facts led the chairperson of the Joint Union Asbestos Campaign to issue the following warning: "In the past 30 years, almost 230 teachers have died of mesothelioma. More than 60 per cent of those deaths have occurred in the last decade.
"It's an alarming upward trend and for every affected teacher there's a classroom full of children and school support staff who have been exposed to the same danger."
A spokesperson with YouClaim's industrial disease claims panel comments, "The fact that some policymakers feel it is safe to cut back on asbestos awareness and safety funding is deeply alarming.
"In some sectors death rates are actually going up – this is no time for us to be resting on our laurels."
