Faulty product injury claim lawyers

When we purchase a drug, whether it is a prescription or over-the-counter medicine, we quite rightfully expect that it contains the pills that the packaging claims it does – in the event it does not and injury or illness occurs as a result, a faulty product injury claim may be made.

The 2011 Nurofen mix-up
In 2011 a story hit the front pages concerning a medication mix-up involving the over-the-counter drug Nurofen Plus.

Nurofen Plus is a readily available painkiller which contains both Ibuprofen and Codeine. However, it emerged that as many as several thousand packs were likely to contain not these ingredients but instead an anti-psychotic drug known Seroquel XL.

Unlike, Nurofen Plus Seroquel XL is a prescription-only drug. It is most commonly use to treat mental health problems such as schizophrenia, mania, and bipolar depression.

Although the dosage of the Seroquel drugs in the Nurofen Plus packets was thought to represent no immediate threat to human health, it was reported that those who mistakenly took them could experience a number of possible side-effects, including sleepiness, headaches and dizziness. It was not thought that any faulty product injury claims resulted from the mix-up.

A spokesperson from the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) commented, "People should check to see if they have any affected packets of Nurofen Plus. If you do, return them to the pharmacy where you bought them.

"If you have taken a tablet and you have any questions, speak to your GP."

"We are taking this matter extremely seriously and we are working closely with the MHRA to investigate fully," said a Nurofen spokesperson.

"Additionally we are in the process of working to ensure the Nurofen Plus packs are double-checked by pharmacy staff before they are handed to customers."
