Going out to eat is often a luxury and many people visit restaurants to celebrate a special occasion.
However, if the restaurant does not prepare their meals properly, customers may later have to make a food poisoning claim.
During 2010 there were nearly 84,560 cases of food poisoning recorded in England and Wales, but there may have been many more, especially if people suffered only mild symptoms, which were not reported.
People affected by food poisoning usually experience indications from between one and three days after eating contaminated food. Symptoms may include vomiting or feeling sick, diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
Although food poisoning can be caused by many different types of food, some particularly common types of food vulnerable to contamination include raw meats, dairy products and 'ready to eat' foods such as cooked meats and pre-packed sandwiches.
Many cases of food poisoning will improve without the need for any treatment and sufferers can find relief by drinking lots of fluids, eating foods which are easily digestible and resting.
However, occasionally food poisoning can pose a serious threat to someone's health, especially if they are vulnerable to the effects of an infection.
Those who should seek medical attention for food poisoning may be suffering from symptoms such as vomiting for more than two days, being unable to keep liquids down for more than a day, fever, or diarrhoea lasting for more than three days.
In very bad cases of food poisoning, a GP may admit a sufferer to hospital so they can be given vital nutrients and fluids intravenously. If the cause of the condition is shown to be bacterial, a GP may also prescribe antibiotics in either tablet or injection form.
Restaurants and other catering business which abide by health and safety regulations and prepare their food correctly significantly reduce the risks of customers falling victim to food poisoning.
