Food and drink processing workers have risk of noise-induced hearing loss

Compensation claims for work-related deafness form the highest proportion of industrial disease cases in the UK and the food and drink processing industry is one of those where workers are likely to risk noise-induced hearing loss.

  • Milling operations: 85-100dB(A)

  • Saws/cutting machinery: 85-107dB(A)

  • Blast chillers/freezers: 85-107dB(A)

  • Packaging machinery: 85-95dB(A)

  • Wheeled trolleys/racks: up to 107dB(A) (from wheel bearings)

Employers have a duty to protect employees from excess and damaging noise so they should try to keep noisy plant away from as many people as possible, such as installing it in a separate area or enclose it with sound insulation, or using noise-dampening material and anti-vibration machine mountings.

If workers still need to stand close to a source of continuous loud noise, they should be given ear protection and their degree of exposure reduced by rotating tasks or using a refuge.
