The food and drink industry is not thought of as being particularly hazardous; there may be long hours and a higher than average rate of burn injuries and musculoskeletal injuries, yes, but it surely compares favourably with an accident at work prone industry like construction. Or does it?
Well, according to some experts, such as Aviva Risk Management Solutions (ARMS), the food and drink industry is actually more hazardous than construction, making its workers some of the most at risk in the UK.
This outlook is supported by data from the Health and Safety Executive, which shows that food and drink workers are over one-and-a-half times more likely to accident at work injury than those in construction.
Despite this, the fact remains that construction workers are more likely to suffer fatal injury in the workplace. for example, in 2009 53 workers from this sector were killed in workplace accidents.
However, this does not mean that the injuries suffered by food and drink industry workers should be considered trivial; there is a very high serious injury rate within the industry and 33 workers have died in food and drink industry accidents in the last decade.
An ARMS health and safety spokesperson comments, "Some of the biggest safety issues in this sector are slips and trips, workplace transport, manual handling and falls from height. In addition, many food and drink manufacturing processes produce high levels of noise, and serious machinery accidents, particularly during cleaning and maintenance work, continue to be an all too frequent occurrence."
The spokesperson also explained how it was an underestimation of the risks involved in the industry that led ARMS to launch a campaign to tackle the risks: "It is this high accident rate that has led ARMS to kick-start a campaign called 'Safety on the Menu', offering free health and safety support to food and drink manufacturers and retailers."
