Get food poisoning compensation by making a holiday accident claim
It is thought that up to 80% of us suffer some kind of illness while on holiday, although most of these cases are relatively mild conditions such as sunburn. However, having a stomach problem that causes sickness and diarrhoea is also an extremely common form of holiday illness.
Although many people put their upset stomach down to not being used to the local cuisine, food poisoning may be the cause in a significant number of cases. E-coli, salmonella and Norwalk-like viruses are some of the types of food poisoning that travellers frequently experience.
E-Coli
E-Coli bacterium is found in meat and dairy foods, but can be removed through thorough cooking. Not cooking burgers for long enough is one of the most common causes of E-Coli food poisoning. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea, and it can be fatal in the young and old.
Salmonella
The salmonella bacterium is found in poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk, meat and water, and can be killed by boiling and cooking. It attacks the stomach, causing symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, and nausea. Severe symptoms are more likely to be seen in young children and the elderly.
Norwalk-like viruses
Norwalk-like viruses are most commonly found in shellfish such as oysters and clams, and causes symptoms such as aching muscles, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea. It is rarely very serious, and usually lasts for 2-3 days.
Have you had food poisoning on whilst on holiday?
Food poisoning generally occurs as a result of poor hygiene management in a caf or restaurant. As there are sometimes many patrons in a restaurant at one time, outbreaks of food poisoning are frequent with many people affected.
Cruise ships are particularly common places for food poisoning outbreaks, as all the people on the ship are likely to have eaten at the same place.
If you have had food poisoning whilst on holiday, you may be able to make a holiday accident claim for compensation. The owners of restaurants and cafs have a duty of care to ensure your health and welfare, and by making you ill through negligent hygiene practices, they have failed in this. If you suffered during an outbreak of food poisoning, this will add support to your holiday accident claim, especially if you have the details of any other sufferers.
