Sadly, every year in the UK, several fires are started as a direct result of faulty lighters – in the event such a fault results in injuries being sustained a personal injury lawyer can be contacted to help those affected make a faulty product injury claim.
Lighter safety standards
Since they produce flames and contain poisonous gas, lighters are inherently hazardous, particularly to children.
Since March 2007 it has been illegal to sell anything other than child-resistant lighters on the UK market – there is also a European Commission directive which forbids the sale of novelty lighters.
Furthermore, all lighters must meet the BS EN ISO 9994 safety standard.
Exceptions
There are some exceptions to these rules. Lighters need not comply with child safety standards if they are of the following kind:
Lighters with a specific purpose (such as barbecue or utility lighters)
Refillable and repairable lighters with a two-year written guarantee
Lighters that don't comply
Trading Standards officers have the power to deliver warnings, safety notices, fines and imprisonments to retailers and manufacturers that do not comply with lighter safety laws.
The dangers of faulty lighters, a case study
In 2011 a couple from Dorset made a faulty product injury claim after a faulty lighter leaked gas and became ignited by a nearby candle, causing their home to catch fire. Although no serious injuries were sustained, the couple suffered considerable psychological trauma and damage to their home.
