Faulty product claims and the Beko fridge fault

In 2011 it became clear that a fault with a particular kind of fridge was behind as many as twenty fires in London, scores of personal injuries and at least one death. Soon afterwards, with the manufacturer of the faulty fridge freezers scrambling to protect customers and repair faults, questions were asked about just how much money the company would need to pay out to compensate faulty product claims.

London Fire Brigade's Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety Regulation, commented, "Any fire can be lethal but the London Fire Brigade is particularly concerned about this because fires involving any sort of fridge freezer develop rapidly and produce an enormous amount of toxic smoke.

He added, "Expert fire investigators have had to work for a long time to confidently establish these faulty fridge freezers as the cause of a number of serious fires. Having established this link, we have worked closely with Beko to ensure the public is kept safe."

It was thought that the faulty occurred when water managed to contaminate the defrost timer switch, which resulted in the fridges developing an electrical malfunction and eventually bursting into flames.

Beko accepted that it would be facing a range of faulty product claims relating to the defects.
