Make a faulty product claim for defective tea lights

When you have guests round, or are having a romantic evening in, candles can be a cheap and simple way to add ambience to your living room. When choosing tea lights, few will be concerned about the prospect of having to make a product liability claim for their purchase.

However, in 2010 packs of tea lights sold by the Body Shop had to be recalled after they were found to be faulty. Two of their sets of tea lights were affected by the recall the 24-pack of un-fragranced lights along with packs of 25 un-fragranced lights - after they were found to have flaring problems.

Tea lights are renowned for being incredibly dangerous not least when there is a defect. Many people have several tea lights burning at the same time, often in more than one room. These will often be left unattended as people forget to blow them out before leaving a room or even before going out.

The mother of a Stevenage fire fighter, who died in a tower block in 2005, has launched a campaign specifically regarding the dangers of tea lights after her 28-year-old son was killed while tackling a blaze started by the lights.

The campaign is aimed at preventing a similar tragedy happening by promoting the dangers of the popular style of candles. Her son and his colleague both died while they tried to save the resident of a burning flat in Stevenage.

The fire was started after a tea light was left burning on a television without a holder and melted on to the TV causing the room to set alight.

The mother is urging people to put the tea lights in a holder before lighting them as many don't realise that the foil base is only intended to contain the hot wax, not to protect surfaces from catching fire.

When using the lights, the following points should be considered:

  • Tea lights should always be lit and put in a non-flammable holder on a heat resistant surface
  • Don't let anything fall into the hot wax, including the spent matches
  • Never place tea lights directly on plastic surfaces such as TV's, computers or baths
  • Never leave a lit tea light unattended

The faulty Body Shop candles have been recalled by the company as a precautionary measure. Anyone who has bought the candles which have a bar code of : 5028197840280 and 5028197613303 should return them to their local Body Shop store for a full refund.
