The danger of Farmer's Lung to stable workers

Farmer's Lung is a respiratory condition caused by the inhalation of dust from mouldy hay or straw. It can be a particular risk for those who work in stables and the level of risk will depend on the amount of dust which has collected in the person's lungs.

Those working with hay or straw are more likely to develop the respiratory disease than those working with loose hay in an open field due to the greater amount of dust that can be inhaled indoors in a short period of time. Even those that live in the city and visit stables fairly rarely can still be at risk from the disease.

Farmer's Lung is typically difficult to diagnose as there is no conclusive test and symptoms are similar to those experienced with other lung conditions such as pneumonia. This means that many with the disease will be unaware they have it.

Symptoms of the condition range from those associated with a slow progressive illness such as irritable cough, fever and chills to a sudden attack which may involve shortness of breath and a rapid heart rate.

As the symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction to mouldy spores, the condition can worsen over time if the sufferer is re-exposed to more of the spores and the body subsequently becomes hyper-sensitive to the allergen.

For people suffering from acute attacks of Farmer's Lung, the first step in treatment is to avoid further contact with any mouldy dust. For serious cases, bed rest may be necessary and oxygen may be required to help relieve shortness of breath.

Although there are certain drugs that can help with symptoms of the condition, they are not recommended to be used over long periods as they can mask lung damage which may be caused by re-exposure.

Prevention is therefore vital to ensuring the health of stable workers. Although stables of note will obtain their hay from a quality merchant that is less likely to supply mouldy hay, sub-standard batches can be common after a poor hay harvest.

Therefore stable chores should be carried out in properly ventilated buildings. Stables should also be wetted down when cleaned to prevent the dust spores from getting airborne and being inhaled.
