Work related accidents, youclaim.co.uk

Human error usually at root of a factory accident

A compensation solicitor in the UK finds that many of the cases which come to his or her attention are work-related injury, such as that incurred during a factory accident.

With so much automation in modern factories, fewer people are needed for most manufacturing processes but human interaction is usually required for cleaning and maintenance tasks as well as monitoring and transport of raw materials or finished goods.

Forklift trucks and stackers are frequently a source of accidents which employers should be able to prevent through providing suitable equipment, and setting in place training schemes and servicing regimes.

In large factories or branch units, the bosses of the company may not have day-to-day oversight of every instance where such vehicles are used and, because of this, they must make every effort to employ suitably senior and responsible people to take charge of operations including delegation of health and safety.

Many workplace accidents are caused by human error. The old wartime adage "Carelessness costs lives" is as true in modern civilian life as in the munitions factories and depots of the last century.

It is so easy for slipshod habits to develop with safety precautions forgotten or shortcuts taken to speed a job but, although a few minutes may be saved, using equipment wrongly may lead to a worker suffering injury or even death.

Forklift trucks appear to be easy to drive, load, and use and are less difficult to handle than a car or lorry but drivers often become complacent and endanger themselves or others by actions such as failing to look out for fellow employees when they are manoeuvring, overloading the vehicle, or mis-loading it so that it is unbalanced, with the risk of the truck or its load falling.

Lifting materials on and off lorries can be a difficult task, especially if inappropriate equipment is used or the work is outside and poor weather conditions cause additional risks.

A stacking truck normally used for indoor transport operations in a factory is unlikely to be suitable for driving in an outdoor depot. It may not have adequate tyres or mirrors, its loading mechanism may be inefficient and hoisting or loading devices insufficiently robust for the job.

It is in such circumstances that a work accident can often occur, even to an experienced driver. Although a resulting personal injury may be partly the fault of the victim because he or she should have known better, the legal responsibility for employees' safety still falls upon the owner and managers of a business.
