Factory accidents and inherent dangers of food and drink manufacture

Many factory accidents occur in the food and drink manufacturing industry which is a work sector that includes 30 different industries, including slaughterhouses, refining (e.g. sugar), grain milling, breweries, and tinned and frozen food manufacture.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the ten years between April 1998 and March 2008 almost 89,000 workers suffered food and drink related factory accidents causing reportable personal injuries. There were 37 fatalities.

The injury rate is 1.6 times above that of the construction industry, and, combining all food and drink manufacturing industries, the injury rate is the highest in the manufacturing sector.

Main causes of personal injury are:

  • manual handling / musculoskeletal injury

  • slips and trips on wet or food contaminated floors

  • falls from height

  • factory transport - including fork lift trucks

  • object strikes, such as sharp knives or falling boxes

  • machinery

Most fatal injuries in food manufacturing factories are caused by workplace transport, falls from height and machinery accidents. However, 35 percent of food and drink factory accidents reported to the HSE involve manual handling injury. Each year over 3,200 acute injuries are caused by lifting and handling - 60 percent of those injuries are due to workers attempting to lift heavy objects.

In the food and drink factory sector most musculoskeletal injuries occur through one of five main causes:

  • stacking and unstacking - such as boxes, crates and sacks

  • pushing wheeled racks - including oven racks and trolleys of produce

  • in the meat and poultry industry, cutting, boning, trussing, and evisceration

  • product packing

  • handling containers of drinks and liquids

These are key areas where employers should have stringent risk assessment procedure for the instigation of safe working practices.
