Factory accident claims and well lit work areas

Factories tend to be filled with dangerous machinery and depending on what products are being produced, might also contain hazardous materials which if a personal injury accident occurs, could result in a factory accident claim being pursued by an employee.

In day-to-day life it is important to take safety precautions but where the risks of personal injury are even higher than usual, such as in a factory, individuals should remember without fail to remain vigilant to and protected against potential hazards.

Whereas failing to wear gloves while gardening may result in a scratch from brambles, failing to wear protective gloves in a factory setting could result in severe burns or fingers needing amputation.

To reduce the possibility of accidents occurring employers should make sure that workers are correctly trained in all aspects of their role, including health and safety procedures.

Moreover, simple changes can be made to the workplace to make it safer for employees. For example better lighting and well-organised materials could save someone from falling over, striking a hard or sharp object, or having harmful items fall on them.

Clear pathways for employees, both pedestrian and in vehicles, should help reduce the amount of accidents which could occur if paths were narrow, dark, and traffic flow directions unclear.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) asks in a slips and trips section of its website, "are work areas and access routes well lit?" The HSE explains that "good lighting is needed so that obstructions and stairs can be seen," and that problems in the workplace could be caused by "dim light, shadow" and "flickering light".

Well lit areas allow workers to see what they are doing, which should help them conduct all their tasks correctly and safely while also helping them to avoid dangerous obstacles should a co-worker become negligent.

As human beings we rely heavily on all of our senses, and some might argue that in a factory sight is the most important sense of all. Without a clear view of their surroundings workers would not be able to perform some of their most basic tasks safely, and relying on their hearing and touch to move around their workplace could be dangerous.

Factories are often noisy and some buildings are prone to echo, distorting any noises that could have been important in avoiding injury. Avoiding obstacles by touching surroundings in such a hazardous workplace could result in a burn or severe cut.
