The appointment in 2009 of an Ethical Practice Manager in the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health underlines the fact that ethics play a part in any claim for work accidents and related personal injury.
Initially, of course, there is an ethical responsibility on the part of the employer to ensure that the employees to whom he or she has a duty of care are appropriately protected from work injury through the use of risk assessments, safety equipment, adequate training and suchlike. The occurrence of an accident at work may not indicate a failing in ethical duty, if the incident was completely unforeseeable, but in other circumstances an ethical failure may be seen.
Speaking of the Ethical Manager's appointment, the IOSH said, "His appointment shows that IOSH takes ethical practice very seriously. Our Royal Charter and Byelaws requires us to uphold the highest possible professional standards.
"With 34,000 members worldwide and growing, it's important for IOSH to ensure that each and every one of our members is adhering to our Code of Conduct. Poor practice damages the good name of health and safety and is something that we cannot tolerate."
Ethical practice is, of course, a field that goes beyond the issues of work injury, including such things as commitment to teamwork, high standards and integrity; but it can, surely, be argued that protecting members of your team, to the highest standards, must imply a level of care for their safety alongside other commercial considerations.
